Choosing a Business or Domain Name

Choosing a business or domain name can be far more important than most people realise.  Some of the factors involved in choosing a business name include memorability, availability, descriptiveness,  appeal and more. When considering a business and/or domain name you should make sure that is does not have negative connotations in potential future markets. We have all received the emails with foreign packaging with some very bizarre names.

Even for your local, same language market care still needs to be taken.

As an example Michael has opened a new business supplying therapists with various products. He chooses the name Therapist Supplies. He then registers the domain name therapistsupplies.com. Spot the problem yet? Google will also see “The Rapist Supplies”, not a good way to be listed and linked!  A better domain name choice might have been
therapist-supplies.com or therapist_supplies.com.

When choosing the Divine Branding name, one of the options we considered was Brand Your Business…but…it also says Brandy Our Business!

Consider language differences if you will be marketing to an international market. Just think of the differences between two English speaking countries, Australia and the USA.   Here a sloppy joe is a jumper, in the US it’s fast food! Do I need to outline the differences between our bum-bag and the US equivalent? Worse, I once called a sandwich a sambo at an event in Texas…it took quite a bit of explaining to get out of that one!

Equal consideration should be given to your business and domain name to prevent embarrassing and damaging results in the future.  Humour is great, but should be used with care. Not everyone has the same view of life, and humour is especially prone to misinterpretation in written materials.

It’s all about finding the right balance, and choosing your business and domain name is something to take a bit of care with…it’s going to be with you for some time!
