Respecting Copyrite

Use of the internet has made access to information and images easier than ever before. Cut, copy and paste means we can work in double quick time! While this is useful in some cases, we need to make sure that we understand and respect the issue of copyright within this environment.

At Divine Branding our golden rule is that unless you have permission from the originator of an image or text - don’t use it!  There are cases where you can seek and receive permission to use content from other sites. For example, a retailer of roller doors may theifuse photographs and information from their suppliers (with their permission). We have seen cases however, where the ease of searching and saving has lead some developers and/or their customers to gather and use images and content without first seeking the permission.

If this is your business web site, blog or other - then it is in your interests to use material that is created or tailored to represent you honestly and uniquely. Would you like to find your hard work being taken advantage of by others? To make it even more important, search engines ultimately find duplicate content and decide the most recent copy is not relevant and are likely to drop you totally or significantly in the search results.

If you find it difficult to put together information for your web site, talk to your developer or locate someone who can help you write your own copy. If you require imagery, try taking photos of your own, hiring a photographer or make use of the many photo and clipart stock web sites. These have become more accessible and have an extensive range of high quality images from under $10 Australian. Consider purchasing the (only slightly) more expensive photos in a higher resolution so that you can then use them to strengthen your branding image on printed materials that will match your web site.

Creating content for your web site can be fun and interesting if you give it a little thought. Do research what your competitors and other businesses are doing. This will give you ideas, and also help you understand what you DON’T want.  Other than that, relax and be creative. Give your reader a friendly and enjoyable experience!
