Domain Name Renewal Scams
As several of my customers have again been stung by unsolicited renewal and transfer requests for their domain names I thought it was time for a reminder as to the importance of knowing who your Domain Name was registered with. Fortunately in Australia the Australian Domain Name Authority (AUDA) keeps the renewal date for .au domains private. Not so for global domains such as .com.
There are several businesses, spread across several continents who’s entire business model is based on mailing out renewal advices to Domain Name owners over 6 months prior to the renewal falling due, asking an above average price. One customer paid $77 for a 12 month renewal, and received nothing for it. They didn’t even attempt to renew and transfer the domain. Chasing a $77 account across international boundaries is almost impossible.
So do please go check who your Domain Name is registered with. If you are not sure ask your web developer or IT support person. Don’t get stung.
